We are true aviation enthusiasts and are fascinated by the B2 Spirit bomber, also known as the Stealth bomber. These types of aircraft are what inspired the name of our beloved original bomber jacket.
History of the B2 Spirit
This charismatic aircraft stands out for its shape and dark color. It can carry up to 16 nuclear bombs at 1,000 km/h. However, the most fascinating aspect of this bomber is its radar invisibility. It has a wingspan of 52 meters, but on a radar, it would only reflect the electromagnetic energy equivalent to the size of an eagle.
The design of this aircraft has its origins in the Third Reich. In 1944, the Luftwaffe, under the orders of Göring, developed the Horten 229. This aircraft aimed to restore Nazi aviation supremacy using cutting-edge technology and radar invisibility, a decisive factor in the Anglo-Saxon victory in the Battle of Britain.
Hermann Göring’s goal was to have an aircraft that fulfilled the “3×1000” (1,000 km range, 1,000 km/h speed, with a range of 1,000 km), and the Horten brothers provided the answer with a jet-powered wooden prototype. Without a tail or rudder, it was a groundbreaking design never seen before. The sinister Nazi leader appreciated the vision of those two engineers and commissioned them to build this aircraft, which was named Horten 229. It first flew successfully on December 18, 1944. This milestone was several generations ahead of any other aircraft and was undoubtedly the most sophisticated German engineering work of its time.
When American troops crossed Nazi borders, they found technologically advanced weapons in unexpected places like forest huts, basements, and caves. They even found a Horten 229 in a hangar near Frankfurt, and under Operation Paperclip, it was taken to the United States, specifically to Northrop Corporation. This company began developing flying wing projects in secret, which eventually materialized in the YB-49, a jet-powered flying wing that flew experimentally in the late 1940s.
Despite the beauty of these aircraft, in the 1950s, flying wing projects and concepts were lost to time.
Four decades after these projects were abandoned, Northrop Grumman started developing the B-2 Spirit. The Stealth bomber finally entered service in 1997, and to date, 21 units have been developed, each costing $737 million.
